In 2010 the G20, the international forum for select governments and central banking, took place in Toronto. Protestors sought to bring attention to issues of poverty, anti-capitalism and austerity and were met with a highly militarized response, including surveillance and advance arrests of activists, agents provocateur from police departments, and mass arrests and incarcerations. In the aftermath of the protests, the Toronto Police Service and the Integrated Security Unit (ISU) of the G20 Toronto summit were heavily criticized for brutality during the arrests as well as massive human rights abuses, resulting in protests, legal action and class action lawsuits.
In 2012, during the making of a community video project on police violence against marginalized and racialized people in Toronto, the Sanctuary community submitted a freedom of information request. Two years later we received copies of the video surveillance filmed by the police in the makeshift cages set up in a film studio to accommodate the mass arrests of over 1,000 people during the G20. Two years later, the footage was used to tell Gabe’s story in What World Do You Live In?
